Microsoft should be fat and lazy by now, but if Steve Ballmer catches you loafing he will kick your @$$ sky-high. Culture urgency, what is that? You left out recruitment... Microsoft probably gets 200 applications for every position filled. And management... Fear of getting chewed out by the boss concentrates the mind wonderfully. And of course, there is a hierarchy going up from team leader to project manager to whatever the next levels are -- a clear division of labor and apportionment of responsibility. Not to mention "soft factors" like rubbing elbows with your peers every day on the Microsoft campus at Redmond and being able to discuss something simply by taking a trip down the hall.
